Rome is now so close that I can see the skyline on the horizon. Today was again an incredible day of hiking. Some clouds made that it was less hot than the previous days. I took off from Campagnano di Roma this morning for another 27 kilometers. A pretty steep climb brought me to the Santuario della Madonna del Sorbo. The gate was open, but there was nobody around. The sanctuary is surrounded by pristine forests. What a peaceful place. I took a little break and stamped my passport in the church.
From here, it was only 3km to Formello. This is the last quiet village before busy Rome. There are already big residential areas for people who often commute to the capital, but the old medieval town has also been well preserved. I enjoyed the narrow streets for a last time before pushing on. The path continued through Parco Veio. This 15.000 hectare park was established to preserve the nature around urban Rome. Farmland, forests and pastures made it a lovely walk. Always going up and down, my legs started to become tired. From time to time, I passed huge villas from rich people living away from everybody close to Rome. Later, the path passed through Etruscan archeological sites. There is not much left to see, but it is fascinating to realise that people lived in these valleys around 500 BC. A last crossing of a field and I entered Isola Farnese. This is a car-oriented modern suburb of Rome. From this town, you walk straight into La Storta where I would spend my final night. And not alone. Because who was waiting for me? Caat! I was so happy to see her. We went for pizza and talked for hours. The hotel is clean and comfortable, but has some weird decorations. There is a picture of the kremlin above our bed. Tomorrow morning, more friends come to La Storta so I won't be alone to walk my final 19km. It looks like I'm going to make it to the finish in Vatican city on my birthday. A magical day is coming up!
